Trafalgar Place was a joint winner in the Housing Design category at last night’s Brick Awards.
The project, developed by Lendlease, is a flagship housing project in the major redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle. It comprises 235 high-quality homes which transform the built environment whilst respecting the history and greater context of the neighbouring buildings. The massing and height of the Trafalgar Place buildings provide variety through scale with a mixture of mini-towers, apartment buildings and townhouses.
The façade treatments echo the context, with brick selected as the principle façade material to offer harmony with the neighbouring buildings. In total, eight different bricks are used throughout the façade treatments to give reference to the materiality of neighbouring buildings. The façade is animated by brick detailing in a series of deep recesses that alternate between brick courses and result in moments of expression. In addition, brick clad parapets and deep window reveals add to the sense of depth across the seamless brick façades. At junctions between varying brickwork colours, keyed-in corners refer to traditional brickworking methods whilst whimsically playing on proportion and scale.
“This scheme stands high above any residential development I have seen in recent years,” remarked a judge from the Brick Awards panel. “[W]ith an extraordinary quality of detail. The project demonstrates the role that brick can play in making a place distinctive and out of the ordinary”.
