Clapham Manor Primary School

Look at Clapham Manor, it’s an absolute jewel

RUTH REED, RIBA PRESIDENT

Much of the building’s power results from the shock of its juxtaposition with the surrounding world. In characteristic dRMM fashion, its expression is very much that of a piece of extraordinary apparatus — a top-of-the-range Bose amplifier, perhaps, plugged into the board school’s beat-up barrel organ. While the practice plays that game very well, one is keen to know what it might make of a larger urban project where the requirement is to make the fabric of the city and not simply the remarkable exception to it. On the basis of the quality of this scheme, I look forward to finding out.

This extension to the existing primary school is a robust, beautiful and modern building which extends and complements the older school. The new building is exceptional in its quality of design and is stunning both externally and internally.

Like all good architecture, it does something beyond its boundaries. It’s sorted out an old back alley and has turned it into a wonderful front door for the school where you can imagine parents and children gathering in the morning and the evening and that’s what good architecture does: positive contribution to the urban public realm.
