Director Alex de Rijke and associate director Michael Spooner were in Exeter to present the designs for the new Academy rebuild, and help launch the ‘Be Inspired’ awareness campaign, which featured the premiere of a short film by ColourBurn.
Prominent members of Exeter’s community, as well as the wider deaf community, were invited to the event at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (7 March 2013). Alex and Michael ran through the key design concepts that have been developed in close consultation with the Academy and which underpin the proposals, currently submitted for Planning.
The new through-school and student accommodation includes environmental and spatial considerations to support the communication needs for both spoken and visual language. But it was the students and staff, stars of the promotional film, who stole the show. The packed gallery was treated to a crash-course in British Sign Language (BSL), with a lesson in finger spelling, and a spot of stand-up, rounding off a thoroughly inspiring and enjoyable evening.
